Fight Depression This World Health Day

Depression is described as ‘a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being’. This state of being in low mood has become so dangerous that the majority of the world population is living with it. People from different age groups and from all walks of life are becoming victim of it. The number of patients suffering from depression, and suicides related to it are rising at an alarming rate. 7th April, 2017 has been chosen to educate people on Depression. This is an initiative by the World Health Organization. Every year 7th April is celebrated as World Health Day and the focus is always a global health issue, and this year, that issue is Depression. The problem with depression is that people become comfortable with it and are ashamed to talk about it. The stigmas associated with it make it worse. So it is very important that when we see someone around us who seems low and it is not usually how they are, we should reach out to them and listen to them without judging. Some of the common symptoms of depression are:
  • Feeling down, upset or tearful.
  • Feeling restless, agitated or irritable.
  • Felling guilty, worthless and low about yourself.
  • Feeling empty and numb.
  • Feeling isolated and not being able to relate to other people.
  • Finding no pleasure in life or things you usually enjoy.
  • A sense of unreality.
  • No self-confidence or self-esteem.
  • Feeling hopeless and suicidal.
Talking is the best way to relieve stress and after that medical help can always be availed. There is no one reason for depression, many factors could be responsible for it. Life events, side effects of a medical treatment, drug abuse, non-psychiatric /psychiatric syndromes, genetic inheritance, they all can contribute towards the lingering depressing feeling. It has been proven time and again that a healthy body not only keeps the body but also the mind healthy. Therefore, an overall healthy body is the key to keep yourself disease free. One of the best ways to keep your mind as well as body healthy is by exercising. Having a health insurance for you and your family is a healthy practice too. Sometimes, even after exercising all the caution in the world, we fall ill and suddenly have a long medical bill to take care of.
