Diwali Celebration: How to Celebrate an Eco-Friendly Diwali this Year?

Diwali is a festival which celebrates togetherness. However, along with this goodness, there are a few not so good things which like air pollution, noise pollution and wastage of resources that can cause harm to the nature. This year, let us pledge to do our bit in saving our mother earth! Here are 06 ways of celebrating Diwali with the same fervour without burdening the environment.

1. Use those Beautiful Diyas to Brighten Your Home

Electricity is an expensive commodity and the bill can cause a hole in your pocket. Try illuminating your home with diyas instead. Being traditional and organic, this is close to the spirit of Diwali and will also help the people whose livelihood depends on the business.

2. Gift Something Handmade

Electronics and gifts made of plastic can contribute to waste after a certain time. Why don’t you opt for a personalized gift made of natural materials like cloth or jute? Gifts made especially by you for your loved ones are irreplaceable. Already excited for the amazing reactions? Get started right now!

3. Wrap the Gifts in Newspapers

Instead of those shiny plastics which are difficult to recycle, wrap the gifts you plan to give to your close ones with newspapers. You can use the comic strips section of the newspaper for children. Be the trend setter amongst your close ones and use your creativity to wrap the gifts with newspapers!

4. Make Your Rangoli With Natural materials

Instead of those chemical rangoli colours, go natural and use flowers like roses, marigolds, chrysanthemums and leaves to make your rangoli. You can try using turmeric, kumkum and coffee powder for colours as well. These things are not only eco-friendly, but can be disposed of easily in your compost bin the next day.

5. Donate Your Old Things

Rather than throwing your things while cleaning your wardrobe, donate them to less privileged. The things will be reused thus reducing wastage. You can also give them a few firecrackers. This gesture will certainly be appreciated and bring a smile on their faces!

6. Go For Eco-Friendly Firecrackers

Although bursting crackers should be completely avoided, it becomes difficult to convince the kids. The best thing to do in such a situation is to buy eco-friendly crackers. These are made of recycled paper and make less pollution.
