How to Keep Your Pets Safe During the Holiday Season with Pet Insurance?

Holidays are the perfect time to visit and bond with friends and family. However, it can also prove to be a challenging time for our furry friends. Besides making sure that your pet’s exercising and feeding schedule is as close to the usual routine as possible, you should also keep them off sweets and other sugary treats.

Handy Tips for the Pet This 2023

Stated below are top tips that can help you to take care of your pets and keep them happy while you are indulging in your holiday:

Be Careful of Food

Food can be a big issue with pets in the house. You will not know to what length your enterprising pet can go to eat the delicious candies. However, remember never to feed chocolates or any other treat that has been sweetened with xylitol to your pet. Ensure it is nowhere near the dining table or unattended plates of food. Also, don’t forget to close the lid of trash cans. Moreover, foods that are fatty, spicy and meant for humans should never be fed to pets.

Be Mindful of What They Drink

If you are celebrating with guests over, make sure your pets aren’t going anywhere near the unattended alcoholic drinks. If ingested, it can result in weakness, diarrhoea, and in more severe cases, respiratory failure and pancreatitis.

Establish House Rules

Demarcate areas in your house and make sure your furry friend realises that they are out-of-bounds. These can include your kitchen or a designated dining area. Give your pet its place where it can snuggle up to, complete with fresh water and food. The idea is to keep a spot ready for them so they can hide from the noise and stir.

Put Your Medications Away

Make sure all your medicines are packed inside a zipper and tucked away in a safe place. Ask your guests to do the same. Pets can be very restless sometimes, and you mustn’t let them hover anywhere close to the medicine chest. Any callousness on this front can end up in your dog or cat sneaking up on medicines, and ingesting which can lead to complications and hospitalisation. It is advisable to have pet health insurance coverage to avoid financial distress.

Don’t Force Unwanted Interactions

Let your pets be if they are nervous or fearful, particularly around strangers. Besides relaxing your pet, this will keep your guests safe as well. In these scenarios, a cat may want to hide. Let it be on its own and access spots that it finds comfortable. If you have birds as your pets, move the cage to a quieter place where they would feel safe. You can also cover the cage with a piece of cloth.

Keep Your Guests Informed

If there is a specific way that you’d want your guests to greet your pet or if your furry friend has any particular issue, it is better to let them know. Talk to your guests once they arrive, or better, tell them before they get to your place. You might also not want them to interact with your pet much.

Wrapping It Up

If you have a cat or dog that is likely to bolt out of the door, it would be wise to keep them locked in a room (or crate) while your guests are still arriving (or leaving). It is usual for your four-legged friend to run out of the house amid activity and confusion. To guard against this scenario, ensure that your pet has an RFID (radio frequency identification) chip that lets you know about its whereabouts.   *Standard T&C apply Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
