Know the 5 Common Pet Surgeries

Like humans, pets too need to undergo under the knife sometimes. A pet dog parent is mostly well-versed in neutering to visiting a vet regularly. In this article, we have discussed five common pet surgeries conducted commonly by veterinary surgeons.

1. Keyhole surgery

Also known as laparoscopic surgery, it involves a couple of minor incisions through which a camera and other instruments are inserted into the body. This surgery is used for organ biopsies, treating bladder ailments, and spaying. It also aids in diagnosing diseases. This surgery is also used on large dogs to avoid stomach twisting and gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Keyhole surgery is less painful than standard surgery and also leads to lesser blood loss and trauma on the body. With small surgical scars, the recovery is quick, with fewer potential complications due to small incisions.

2. Dental surgery

Pets are susceptible to many oral health problems that require dental surgery. Though these can be quite painful, veterinary doctors take all the necessary precautions to minimise the pain. Some of the common dental surgeries include tooth extraction, tooth filling, jaw fracture management, and removal of the oral tumour, among others. Note that pets can become irritable when they suffer from dental problems. In such a scenario, it’s important to get them treated at the earliest as they may become aggressive due to pain. Dental surgery conducted at the right time can relieve your pet from pain and curb its aggression.

3. Orthopedic surgery

This type of surgery in pets involves invasive and non-invasive procedures. This surgery is necessitated by the underlying cause of the disorder and the part of the body that gets affected. Some of the common orthopaedic surgeries in pets include Femoral Head Osteotomy, Cruciate Ligament Repair, Leg Amputation, and Bones Fracture Repair. Trauma to the skeletal system, infections from microorganisms, and age-related conditions can lead to various orthopaedic diseases in pets. Just like any other surgery, pre-operational consultation is of paramount importance to make sure the needs of your pets are well met. Generally, orthopaedic surgery is conducted as a last resort to alleviate pain in your pet.

4. Soft Tissue Animal Surgery

Often, pets develop tumours and masses under their skin and also internally. Though all of them are not cancerous, it’s advisable to get them surgically removed. Note that this type of surgery is not related to bones or joints, and can range from spays and neuters to complicated inter-abdominal surgeries. If you find abnormal lumps on your pet’s body, see him/her vomiting, losing weight and straining to urinate, among others, you must immediately take your pet for a check-up. These are all symptoms of a soft tissue issue, which may require immediate surgery.

5. Foreign Body Removal Surgery

Pets can sometimes get stuff lodged in their eyes, paws, ears, and mouth. Though the chances of this are pretty high for outdoor pets, even indoor pets are susceptible to such threats. Also, in some cases, your pets may end up consuming items that don’t pass readily from their gastrointestinal tract such as toys, sticks, strings, etc. Some of the ingested items can result in systematic toxicities, while others may result in damage to the intestinal tract itself. In such cases, immediate surgery is required to ensure the well-being of your pet. If you suspect your pet to have been consumed or penetrated by a foreign object, seek medical attention at the earliest.

Wrapping It Up

Cost varies depending on the type of surgery. However, if your pet needs surgery, make sure to avail the services of a reputed clinic equipped with the latest tools and facilities. Also, consult with the doctor regarding post-operative care to see your pet quickly getting back on its feet. To remain financially safe, ensure to include your pet in the circle of protection, and buy a pet dog insurance policy.   *Standard T&C apply Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
