Vietnam Unveiled: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Time to Visit

Vietnam has been a popular destination amongst Indians for quite a few years now. As per a McKinsey report, as of November 2023, the number of Indians travelling to Vietnam was at an all-time high. While Vietnam is beautiful all year round, some seasons will be more suitable for you as a traveller.

Best Time to Visit Vietnam

Let’s look at the different months of the year to know which ones are ideal for visiting Vietnam.

1. January - February - March

Vietnam experiences mild winter in January and February, making the weather dry and slightly cold. The days will be mostly warm and sunny, making your travels pleasant. January is also the time of the Lunar New Year or Tet celebrations, so try to pack in as many destinations as possible, such as Hoi An, Phu Quoc, and Con Dao. If you are looking for something different, consider heading to central Vietnam for some cycling and trekking. March is one of the best times to visit Vietnam due to Spring. Trekking in central Vietnam remains an enticing option but you can also consider southern Vietnam to soak in the sunshine on beautiful beaches. Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Ho Tram, and Con Dao are some beachside destinations to consider in March.

2. April - May

April is the prime month to experience Vietnam's enchanting landscape. With pleasant and dry weather, especially in the southern areas, one can trek, bike, or indulge in some beachside relaxation. The heat might increase in May, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius. You may even experience some occasional showers signalling the start of the rainy season. The northern and central areas, however, provide a more suitable environment for exploration. Don’t miss the Thanh Minh Festival, the Phong Sinh Festival, and the Hue Festival during these months.

3. June-July

Just like India, most of Vietnam too experiences the monsoon in these months. In June and July, consider visiting the central region cities like Hue, Nha Trang, Hoi An, and Da Nang if you are looking for sunshine. Monsoons and occasional flooding can limit your experience of the South while a visit to the North may expose you to intermittent showers. The Nha Trang Sea Festival and the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival are a worthwhile event to experience in these months.

4. August - September

August in Vietnam can mean grey skies and rainy landscapes. However, the central areas of the country are still dry. So, you may want to head to Quy Nhon, Da Nang, and Nha Trang, for their secluded beaches and warm sunshine. While the first half of September mirrors August, the latter half may lead to some weather changes with decreased rainfall in southern and northern areas. Avoid central areas in September as it is typhoon season. Events, such as the Hanoi Pride, Vietnam National Holiday, and Trung Thu can make your visit during this time exciting and memorable.

5. October - November - December

These months are an ideal time to visit Vietnam as the southern and northern areas experience a return of dry weather. Head to the mountainous Sa Pa in the North for some adventure and experience the Khmer culture in Vietnam with the Ok Om Bok Festival in the South, particularly Tra Vinh City. The ever-popular Ho Chinh Minh City and Mekong Delta are also ideal destinations during this time. December is the best time to visit Vietnam, as the nights are pleasantly cold and the days warm. Plus, Christmas and year-end celebrations are in full gear, making Vietnam a perfect destination for merrymaking and parties. Whichever time you choose to visit Vietnam, you should have one companion along with you for safe travels - an international travel insurance plan.
