Grabbing a quick snack on your way to work is the new breakfast trend. Also, healthy home-made meals are replaced by easily available foods from your favourite fast-food joints. Kids these days prefer these foods and tend to fulfil their nutrition requirement. While it may be only satisfying for the tongue, there is very negligible nutrition value in these junk foods. With our busy lives, we often resort to eating junk foods, but regular consumption can harm the body to the point of some irreparable damages. More evidently termed as fattening foods, but apart from those few inches on your waist, there are some serious effects of junk food.
Junk food refers to food items that are high in calories but low in essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These foods are often rich in sugar, unhealthy fats, and salt, making them tasty but unhealthy when consumed in excess. Common examples include chips, candy, soda, fast food, and packaged snacks. One of the most common and perceivable effects of junk food is a rise in obesity in an individual. Junk foods are loaded with sugars, calories and fats that are a prime factor resulting in weight gain. Further, obesity is the starting point for issues that originate like diabetes, joint pain, and various heart ailments.
High intake of sugars and fats tend to suppress the function of the brain that helps in learning and memory formation. Results displayed in a sudden inflammation in the hippocampus region of the brain, which is responsible for your memory and recognition.
One of the bad effects of junk food is overeating. One may end up eating more than they require due to the fluctuation in their blood sugar levels. It makes the brain demand more food than the normal requirement. Further, there are problems in the digestion of such foods, which add up to the harmful effects of junk food consumption.
Excess consumption of junk foods changes the chemical composition of your brain. This change makes your body more dependent on such junk foodstuffs and craves them more and more. It almost acts like an addiction and people go through withdrawal symptoms and can lead to depression. It further causes hormonal imbalance in the body leading to wanting more of those junk foods.
A healthy body requires essential nutrients for its growth and development. While the bad effects of junk food are evident, they lack basic nutrition too. These unhealthy habits, coupled with inadequate nutrition levels, hamper the brain and other parts of your body.
